    Michael V.

Dear Dr. Rozbruch, Dustin and Staff,

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest thanks to you all of the wonderful care to which I received over the past year. I came to your offices pretty banged up, bowed legs, cartilage worn to the bone after 3 medial meniscus surgeries and in constant pain in both knees. Many doctors took one look at me and said I needed double knee replacements at age 46 and that I would never run again. Dr. Rozbruch gave me the option of undergoing a high tibia osteotomy of both legs to correct my bowed legs.

Both surgeries were a complete success and I not only have been able to live pain free but I can run again. Just 5 months after my last external fixator was removed I competed in several races including a Half Ironman Triathlon, which consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 run. I had a great race, placing 5th in my age group and 50th overall out of 1000 competitors. I have enclosed a picture taken during that race. Thanks to Dr. Rozbruch and his staff, my future in racing is bright and I am now training for my eleventh full Ironman in 2012.

I started gymnastics when I was six years old, competed from nine to sixteen years, ran track, was a cheerleader in high school, played USVBA volleyball as a young adult, and became a rock climber at twenty-four. I had the sprains, strains, pulled muscles, bumps and bruises of a typical athlete, but nothing could prepare me for the dramatic accident I had on the cliff. At 26, I was rock climbing in the Trapp Rocks in Connecticut when I slipped and fell…not to the ground, but back into the cliff. I was caught by the protection I had placed into the rock face, and as I fell I became a pendulum - the impact of my fall was taken by my left heel, breaking the talus and dislocating my ankle.

It took four hours to get to a local hospital; more than 24 hours to finally arrive at the hospital near my home and have emergency surgery.

The next morning, my surgeon stood at the foot of my bed and told me I had a 50% chance of walking normally again. No more running, no jumping, no volleyball, no skiing, no walking? I was devastated. Over the next few years I adapted to a less-than-perfect ankle. I found I could use it, although it would swell and hurt if I used it too much. Thankfully I could hike and play tennis, and I discovered competitive west coast swing dancing.

Ten years ago I decided I had to do something about my right leg. I was suffering severe pain and avoided walking even the shortest distances. My lower leg was becoming more and more crooked; I fell often, sometimes tearing ligaments. I had undergone reconstructive surgery on this leg 30 years earlier correcting the damage from recurring bone tumors and radiation treatment. For most of my adult life I had functioned well, walking with a mild limp and limited knee action but the effects of age and wear had set in earlier than I had imagined. And my leg had returned to its more deformed position with the knee cavity more arthritic and fused.

Armed with my x-rays I conferred with orthopedic Docs in Boston and Providence area and presented my unusual case. No one could articulate a solution nor was anxious to do anything proactive. Leave well enough alone was the general tenor. One specialist kept shaking his head as he studied the films "It’s amazing you can walk"...were the most positive words he offered. My pain had gotten so bad I began to think amputation might be an option.

    Bobby M.

The family ski trip was meant to be an opportunity for 8-yr-old Bobby Menges to finally have a vacation after undergoing 1 ½ years of cancer treatment for neuroblastoma. Instead, on his first run down the mountain, he suffered a severe break of his left femur. After a 3-hour ambulance ride home to Long Island and an emergency surgery to place pins to stabilize the broken bone, the active second grader --- and passionate football player --- was immobilized in a wheel chair for 15 weeks.

Following months of aggressive physical therapy, it was obvious that Bobby needed further treatment. His parents consulted Dr. Robert Rozbruch, Director of the Institute for Limb Lengthening & Reconstruction at HSS who diagnosed Bobby with a leg-length discrepancy caused by the fusing of his growth plate. Bobby’s left leg would never grow on its own.

Between the ages of 17 and 19 I had two reckless accidents on a moped and a bicycle. The repairs to my leg were hasty. My parents and I were told there would be a ½ inch discrepancy. By the time I was 40 the discrepancy tripled. Even with custom-made shoes walking a few blocks was a chore and stairs were out of the question. The pain in my neck and back was becoming unbearable and my world was shrinking. Fast.

It was not until 2003 that I knew that there was a procedure available to help me. I live in Los Angeles so I started my search there and worked my way across the country meeting many doctors. I got a lot of different opinions. When I met Dr. Rozbruch I immediately knew he was the doctor for me. He instantly captured my confidence as only someone with the utmost skill and experience can.

The leg lengthening process, for me, began during the spring of 2008. I met with Dr. Rozbruch and his interns; we decided that I was an appropriate candidate; we booked the surgery. It was effortless. The office completely accommodated my timing needs, and the first surgery took place in July.

During the 10 weeks that I wore the external fixator, I met with Dr. Rozbruch regularly. I came to look forward to my appointments. The members of his staff are very compassionate. And, Dr. Rozbruch’s manner combines professionalism and caring in just the proper balance. He and his PA were always a keytouch away, responding with wonderful immediacy whenever I had a question. The whole experience was a fantastic physical and emotional journey...

You and your wonderful staff have in 18 months transformed my wife Ann from immobile, nearly incapacitated and likely heading for life in a wheelchair; to the super active person she really has been throughout our marriage.

The transformation was close to miraculous. You cured not just bone and tendon; but also returned her positive mental outlook toward herself, her friends, and her family.

    Jocelyne

Last night, Jocelyne and I finally had a chance to look over the CD you prepared for us. I was amazed at how she reacted towards the improvement of her leg. While she was viewing the CD, it looked like she wanted to cry. After viewing the pictures the first words out of her mouth were, "Oh my God! This doctor is the best! Look at the difference in my leg!”

I can't believe it's been 5 years since having my surgery... At times, I thought I would go crazy with two broken legs - but I ALWAYS had faith in you... and I knew the benefits would out weigh the temporary pain I felt. And in the end, the benefits most certainly out weighed the pain.... In fact, I don't even recall the pain - I just remember it was uncomfortable and a bit frustrating... and most of all, I remember your patience and reassurance.

It all started in April of 2004, I was in an Ultralite accident at an air show in Florida. From the crash I sustained a double compound of my lowerright leg. At the hospital there, I was placed in an external fixator. For the next six months, I was told by my doctor in Michigan I was not to put any weight on the leg and that my leg would be one inch short for the rest of my life.
